Mistress Black Widow - 2003-12-06 19:31:10
"Sea turtles?!?" "Aye, sea turtles." Mistress Black Widow took another long pull at the tankard of ale. "Had a little piece o' ratty rope, the Lord only knows where he found it, and he kept trying to tie it around a sea turtle. Said he was trying to build a raft." The man laughed appreciatively. He was new to Cayo Hueso, and had wandered into the tavern to find a drink, a boast, and a wench. He looked appraisingly at the woman, hoping he had found all three. "You've got a way with a tale, my little lass. I'll buy ye another ale, and maybe you can tell me another." The rest of the men at the table fell quiet, eyes darting warily towards the Widow. The last man who called her that had left the tavern with one less finger. But to their surprise, the Widow's knife stayed sheathed. She was staring out the window to the harbour. "Speak of the devil," she breathed. The figure was no more than a silhouette, but there was no one else in the Caribbean with that peculiar, lurching walk. The new man had returned with her ale, thrusting the tankard in her face. She took it without looking at him, tipped it up to drain it in one long draught, and slammed it down onto the table. "Thank ye kindly, sir," she said, getting up and straightening her plumed hat. She strode to the door, calling back over her shoulder, "Watch yourselves, me boys, there's a strange wind out tonight." The tavern's patrons shrugged. The Widow speaking as politely as a highborn lady, and leaving the tavern without a brawl, no less. A strange wind indeed.
